Better bugs? Like clean cockroaches? No, I was just being brief. The UI upgrade I am doing is paying off. It’s getting easier to use. That’s important. It’s also highlighting some weak edges. I made some changes that mean a screen is re-entered from different points. There’s a timer running on it. And now everything gets out of sync. But, this bug will make the whole thing better(aha) because of what I have found. – More robust, more logical in its flow, so its worth it. A “better” bug. ๐Ÿ™‚

OK so I am improving the UI. It’s going well, a bug or two to fix, but basically it already functions in a better way. It’s a bit of a reconstruction as it turns out, but shouldn’t take too long. I am going to try and get to the standard of being able to show a screenshot or two. I am not a graphic designer so this might be uphill!! ๐Ÿ™‚

My iPhone/iPad Football Manager type game 72 – Mine, all mine!

I was reflecting on this as I close in on completion, every line, every piece of code, every design element of this game was created by myself alone. This is like the original Spectrum Football Manager that was so successful for so long. Now, at this stage, there are some things I could call on others for, things that may add some polish or final touches that are better than the things I can do myself. But, I am also thinking that I won’t do that, that I will continue to do it all myself right to release.

This puts me in the position of a singer songwriter who plays all of the instruments on his album. He may not be the best drummer but he plays the drums. There is something good about this and I think it is what I will do. It’s been a lot to create this game, it doesn’t have to be perfect, I just have to be happy myself with what I put out.

My iPhone/iPad Football Manager type game 69 โ€“ Dragging, dropping

OK the new team selection is much better. It needs polish, some minor bug fixes, but it does the job. Another task out of the way. Just a continuous process on my run in now to finishing.

Gotta take it one task(match) at a time, not looking beyond the next task(opponent). It doesn’t matter about completing the game (winning the league), just about whatever task(team) we have to beat by the weekend(on Saturday).

The run to the Premiership title has been fascinating, Mancini vs. Ferguson. I am on my own run-in to completion. It took a few days after my breakย to get back to momentum but now I am. It’s about function, yes, getting more pieces working as planned, step by step, but mostly now, it’s about the gameplay. The focus, the priority from now, is entertainment. I have to spend the time available on tasks that boost the entertainment, that is the priority strategy.

I’ll be asked how long more to go, and I won’t give a commitment of course. There is no point in disappointing people. This is creative work, and it doesn’t always work to a schedule.

But I like what I am producing, I like what is there.

Pushing for Promotion

Well this is an interesting time. I am closer than ever to finishing a game that has taking me a long, long time to write. In the process I have learned much. Plenty about the iPhone, plenty about what I am trying to achieve, and plenty about how best I write games. It’s been written in many different places and countries, in different environments. In different personal circumstances, and different amounts of pressure, problems, and ease in life.

I have become challenged, stressed, frustrated, philosophical, excited, happy and relaxed. – All along the way of writing this.

I have met, through social media, through this, some great people. And continue to.

Why am I a bit retrospective now? I am just about to take a short break, recharge my batteries, ready for the final run- the final push for promotion!

My iPhone/iPad Football Manager type game 67 – 70 yards to the goal

It’s a long way but it is still possible to score (see my Facebook). I am just trying to complete the second last big chunk of function. Maybe I am at 70 minutes not 70 yards? A lot of this piece is working, just gotta fix up some points. Then it’s the final big chunk, (80 minutes?), then I guess I go into extra time ๐Ÿ™‚

Cup, Bugs and Balotelli

Dealing with some bugs in the cup matches. Mostly it is working just some fixtures are not doing what they should do. I’ll have this sorted soon, but I’ll have to adjust another part of the program so that they work better together. Then there is one more big functional piece to do and lots of rats and mice things to complete. So it goes onโ€ฆ

Balotelli was interesting to watch this weekend from the point of view of man management. He can be a match winner, but now he is being immature and reckless, even dangerous to other players. Mancini is giving up on him for now, saying he won’t play him. -Best idea as he is now disruptive to the team itself, team discipline, and team morale.

How do you control him and get the best out of him? Quite a man management problem.

My iPhone/iPad Football Manager type game 66 – Functional Completion

– That is my next milestone. Not far off now, the game will have all of the main functionality I want in it. All of the components that I will build with to make the gameplay right. It’s good to be close to this.

Then a new phase will start, a phase with many repeated iterations. Each iteration will either fix a bug or improve the fun in the game. I am looking forward to this phase. The programmer in me will be working, working to clear bugs and refine how it works.

Also working will be the games designer in me. The person that knows what is needed, what next step to take, what change or tweak will make it better. This is the advantage of making it all yourself, you can do that, and I do, all the way through development. And I don’t have to try and explain the concepts, I just create them. ๐Ÿ™‚
