Marketing the Sistine Chapel.
I was talking to a games developer today. He was talking about pressure from marketing to make changes to the game. Now, I respect marketing but it is not games design. Games development has an artistic component. It doesn’t work to a formula- “people like red, make the game red, then it will sell”.
I made a light-hearted analogy using a great artist. I said imagine Michelangelo painting the Sistine chapel. Nearby there’s a guy watching him after a while says “you need to put a goblet on the right, there is a very popular painting down the road in a church and it has a goblet on the right -you need to put a goblet on the right. You should listen to me I know what people like, I know what’s popular”
You get my point? 🙂
