[...] So who is this Kevin, and what relevance does it have on today’s post? Well, Kevin Tombs developed the first every football manager simulation game for the ZX Spectrums back in the very early 1980’s. In the game everyone the opportunity to manager a team, and watch the game unfold in pure two dimensional unadulted by advertising green graphics. Want to see what kept us in our bedrooms for so long at the time without a staple through their naval? Well you can still play a version of the game by clicking here. [...]

That's funny! But no, I never do that. I am quite puritanically obsessed with the idea that the game should be as much fun and challenge for me as anyone else. So I never include cheats!

Be honest - do you sway the odds so the team that you support perform better than average? I would be tempted to slip in a helpful algorithm to give my team Derby County a nudge up the table. I'm afraid I would be an unjust god inflicting injuries, crap players and locusts on Forest.

Enjoy the gig - should be epic!

Recreating the retro appeal is something I do want to do, but I am not copying that. It draws from it in concept, you could say, but it is a complete re-write. On the other hand I am not trying to create a big game, with lots of functionality, just because the iPhone offers more to work with. What I am trying to is make something easy to use that does the basics very well, then build on that carefully over time.

I will be following your updates with interest. One big question comes to mind. Are you trying to recreate FM in the image of the original with all of its raw and retro appeal or do you see this as an opportunity to move the idea on? I dread to think how much more powerful an iPhone is than the hardware platforms you originally coded against but this must open up new avenues.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, a few people have told me they learned from looking at the source code. You are right it was not hard to break in to to see. Interestingly that was because when I put the original game out piracy was not around! So, I did put some copy protection in but no significant, and it stayed that way. I guess also with the code being in Basic it was more manageable to look at and learn from.

For my friends and I Football Manager was crack cocaine. I spent many many hours glued to it and I'm sure my career in IT was nudged along by learning from your source code (sorry - wasn't exactly hard to view!). Now, just when I am fit to return to society you have re-aquainted me with FM courtesy of the Speccy emulator. There goes the evening. Again...
